Akademiska Orkestern

Akademiska Orkestern is a full-size symphony orchestra at the Åbo Akademi University of Turku. It is one of the oldest and currently also one of the biggest university orchestras in Finland. In 2008 the orchestra celebrated its 80-year anniversary. Currently there are about 70–80 players in the orchestra. The orchestra resides at the Sibelius museum in Turku. Since 1991 the orchestra has been conducted by Mr. Sauli Huhtala.

The orchestra gives annually 5–7 symphony concerts. In addition to this, it traditionally performs in festivities of the Åbo Akademi University. Akademiska Orkestern also co-operates with the choirs of Åbo Akademi University Florakören and Brahe Djäknar. The traditional Advent concerts at the Turku Cathedral are conducted by Mr. Ulf Långbacka, the conductor of the choirs. The orchestra can also be hired in varying ensembles.

In recent years Akademiska Orkestern has been especially active. The orchestra has given several symphony concerts both in Finland and abroad, eg. in Germany, Estonia, Sweden and Austria.
